Hoofdstuk 4.1, Van handwerk naar machine
De eerste fabrieken:
Eind 18e eeuw ontstonden er in Groot-Brittannië de eerste fabrieken: hallen waarin machines
stonden en grote aantallen arbeiders werkten. De opkomst van de productie in fabrieken noemen
we industrialisatie. Veel ondernemers maakten gebruik van huisnijverheid, maar door alle regels
van het gildesysteem waren die erg duur geworden. Ondernemers schakelden daarom mensen op
het platteland in. Deze boeren verdienden wat bij. De huisnijverheid verdween, omdat er
grondsto en goedkoop uit de koloniën kwamen. Er werden machines ontwikkeld die niet meer
met handkracht werden aangedreven, maar door watermolens. Later werden deze machines
vervangen door stoommachines. De grote veranderingen door de komst van fabrieken, machines
en stoomtreinen vanaf 1750 noemen we de industriële revolutie.
