, Assignment 1 – know how to deal with passengers who have special
requirements
1.1 Identify different airline passenger types:
Leisure – charter : PAX of family going on holiday. Hotly happy to fly.
Scheduled: A flight that goes regularly even with 10 PAX.
Age groups: Elderly passengers and young passengers in different ages
Passengers with special requirements: People who travel for the first time, elderly person, someone
insecure, passengers who need assistance or dead or blind people, pregnant mothers with extra care
and a big belly, children’s travelling alone.
Non English speaking, nervous passengers obese: Very corpulent passenger, does not fit between
armrest of seat, or people that are not speaking English. Also people that are nervous, for example
people who are travelling for the first time.
1.2 identify the range of passenger needs
Passengers with special requirements will have different needs:
When you are a wheelchair passenger with reduced mobility, you will be brought to the aircraft be a
handling company like Axxicom. When you are WCHC, completely paralysed or you are medical
stretchered, because you had an accident and you need to be transferred horizontally you will be
brought to the aircraft by special equipment.
Expectant mothers don’t need a special seat on the plane, because everyone has booked a fixed
place. However, it is useful to keep an eye on them and, for example, to give an extension belt. The
same the same applies to deaf and hearing impaired people. They don’t need a special seat, but they
must be monitored and receive extra help.
For expectants mothers who are pregnant and have a big belly it is useful to give an extension belt.
This is an extended belt, because the normal belt no longer fits due to the big belly and without a
belt it can be dangerous. For medical passengers maybe is it important to have extra oxygen, so that
if they lack oxygen, they can get extra oxygen. This will be brought on board before the flight starts.
Extra oxygen for a medical PAX will be ordered in advance to make sure that the oxygen bottles on
board will be used for emergencies. There must be good medical assistance on board, such as a
stretcher. So that the person can be transported horizontally, or for passengers who cannot sit
upright.
The assistance dog remains on the ground in front of the feet during the flight and leashed for safety.
The dog also needs a harness.
Deaf passengers need more assistance when boarding the aircraft. They need a little bit explanation
about the safety procedures, pointing out by safety on board card. Blind people needs more
assistance in the airplane. Explain by means of the braille safety on board card where they can find
the emergency exits. Show them how they can use the call button. Explain toilets, how many
seatbacks to front or back. For blind and deaf people you need to keep an eye on them during the
flight. For blind people you need to explain their position in the aircraft, how many seatbacks to the
toilet, to the exit, to the galley, where can they find the call button, the life vest, the oxygen mask
