THESIS

In Great Expectations, “Charles Dickens illustrates women as mostly wicked and unsympathetic

characters in this novel. Throughout the novel, Pip is treated poorly by his sister Mrs.Joe, Miss

Havisham and Estella. This novel shows how women were seen as in the 1860s in Europe. There

is only one exception to this in the novel and that is Biddy who is a true friend to Pip and cares

about him.

1st BODY:

Miss Havisham

Miss Havisham, the owner of Satis House is quite biased to men and she sees Pip whom she

thinks she can victiimize with the help of her daughter estella.

“Break their hearts my pride and hope, break their hearts and have no mercy.”

She drew an arm round my neck, and drew my head close down to hers as she sat in the chair.

"Love her, love her, love her! How does she use you?Love her, love her, love her! If she favours

you, love her. If she wounds you, love her. If she tears your heart to pieces — and as it gets older

and stronger, it will tear deeper — love her, love her, love her!"
