STATEMENT OF INTENT

In Great Expectations, “Charles Dickens illustrates women as mostly wicked and

unsympathetic characters in this novel. Throughout the novel, Pip is treated poorly by his sister

Mrs.Joe, Miss Havisham and Estella. This novel shows how women were seen as in the 1860s in

Europe. There is only one exception to this in the novel and that is Biddy who is a true friend to

Pip and cares about him. I think this is worth exploring as it will reflect how women specifically

played a role in Charles Dickens life and will also depict the image of women in Europe in the

1800s. Dickens didn’t just randomly make all the females pick on the main male protagonist Pip.

There must be a reason behind this. This is what I want to explore in my essay and hopefully find

some answers in my research. I intend to develop ideas using some research and quotes that I

will be using to support my thesis. The ideas that come to me can be changed and modified to

look more refined and to be on point. But while writing and while peer editing a lot of ideas can

be switched around to make reader more attracted to this writing piece. The major points of

support will be the quotes from the different females in the story directed to Pip and then I will

be explaining how these quotes are biased towards Pip and how they affect him emotionally.

The specific areas of knowledge that I will need to strengthen is using certain literary

devices. Using literary devices with a huge meaning hidden behind it is an art and it is not

learned overnight. But I think that is one of the main things I should focus on and try to

accomplish it throughout the essay. Another area of knowledge I need to work on is transitioning
