The New Year's Concert of the Wiener Philharmoniker (German:
Neujahrskonzert der Wiener Philharmoniker) is a concert that
takes place annually on January 1 in the Golden Hall (German:
Goldener Saal) of the Vienna Musikverein, the concert hall of
Vienna. It usually starts at 11:15 am CET.
I chose this concert because it is one of the most famous concerts. The first
concert took place in 1939. It is because of the halls’ superb acoustics, that this
important venue is seen and broadcasted all over the world. My grandmother
also watches this concert on TV every year, so I had already heard it partly. I
expected that there would be nice music. I knew in advance that it is not my
favorite style of music, so I wouldn't really go there for pleasure. I think it is a
beautiful tradition, I hope it will stay that way.
I know some songs, for example from Strauss sr. and jr. . These artists are of
course not present, which would be strange. I don't know the conductors, among
the most famous ones were Herbert Von Karajan and Lorin Maazel, nor the
musicians. I have already come in contact with the New Year's concert thanks to
my grandmother, as I said before.
A Philharmonic orchestra consists of various wind and string instruments, an
organ is also present in the building. It is a pretty room with a lot of decoration.
In addition, it is also very beautifully lit by classic lamps on the ceiling. The
ceiling is also very high, it is a very impressive space.
Many people were present, it is therefore a very well known concert. You notice
that children are not here. The audience mainly consists of adults and many
elderly people who really enjoy classical music. So I think I would have been the
youngest there. There is a waiting list to attend this annual concert for at least
three years in advance.
I think everything is very visible from all places. On the walls are also a kind of
balconies where people can sit, so from here you have a view of the entire space.
The concert was as I expected. I like the
music, but it is not my favorite style of
music. I'm glad I saw this once, but that's it.
