Conflict Viewing Essay: Part 1

PHI 210- Critical Thinking

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere” famous words quoted from the late
Martin Luther King Jr (1). Colin Kaepernick taking a knee during the National Anthem was
done to bring awareness to racial injustice and police brutality to African Americans and people
of color. Instead of opening up a dialog about the oppression of people of color this

angered many people because they believed kneeling showed disrespect to the American flag
and members of the armed forces, feeling it was ineffective and counterproductive, and

sowed division in the country.

Firstly, some Americans believe that kneeling was disrespectful to the American flag but
what I find interesting is some of those same people wear the flag as clothing and can be seen
with the flag on their ball caps, biker jackets, shirts, shorts and bandanas. There is a law
against this that states that wearing the flag is disrespectful. The 4 U.S. Code S 8 Respect for
flag law states,” The flag should never be worn as apparel, bedding or drapery (3). This same
law states in section (j) that no part of the flag should be use as a costume or athletic uniform
(3). Another reason also used was that kneeling during the anthem disrespected members of
the armed forces, however, an IAVA poll taken in 2017 shows that 62 % of military personal
agree with the protest 34% disagree and 4% are unsure (4).

Secondly, the impression that the protest was ineffective and counterproductive can be
viewed in different ways for instance, the protest was peaceful and respectful kneeling is
humbling and non-disruptive so some people may have a point because the squeaky wheel
gets the most oil. Disruptive protest like the January 6,2021 insurrection only leads to death
and destruction so taking a knee during the National Anthem was all that was needed to get
the attention of the people that agreed or disagreed with the peaceful protest.
