BUS 315 – Cost and Price Analysis

Introduction

Analysis of Universal Drones, Inc.’s Cost Classifications

For a cost to be reasonable, the type of cost must be agreeable, as well as the price. For

example, a contractor may need to purchase sheet metal, but they buy a high-priced metal instead

of an average-priced metal of the same quality. This would not be a reasonable cost. If the price

is more than what a competitor or sensible person would pay, then it is not a reasonable cost.

(John E. Murphy, 1)

Allowable costs vary from contract to contract. A cost is considered unallowable if it is

not “allowable in the cost principles," or it doesn't “meet the requirements of…business

practices, public law, and legal precedent” (John E. Murphy, 1). An example of an

unallowable cost is buying a company for more than the value on its balance sheet. (John E.

Murphy, 1)

“As long as they are reasonable and allowable, costs are allocable (John E. Murphy, 1).”

There are three questions to ask to determine if a cost is allocated. Is the cost sustained because

of the contract? Can the cost be divided between different contracts, and if so, does it benefit

them? Is it necessary to conduct business operations? These costs include taxes, rent, and labor.

(John E. Murphy, 1)
