AJS/586: PUBLIC POLICY ISSUES
Public Opinion Poll and Paper
"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere" according to Reverend Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr. With our society constantly changing and evolving, our rules and policies must
evolve with that change; if not, an injustice can result within our criminal justice system. This
injustice may come from policies implemented by elected officials, as is the case of the three-
strike sentencing. To limit these occurrences and their devastating effects, various polls and
surveys are often created to weigh the public’s opinions about those choices. An examination of
those surveys will help explain the opinions and concerns that many in society have regarding
the three-strike sentencing regulation.
It is important to discuss the key people involved and why they were chosen to be part of
the survey. It is also imperative to mention why certain questions were proposed, as well as how
these criminal justice policies - such as the three-strike sentencing - impact cities, interest groups,
and society. Lastly, the survey conducted will further explain and demonstrate information
accumulated from the key people and the survey questions proposed to them with regard to
three-strike sentencing.
Key actors & why they were chosen
There are key people who operate on all local and state levels, which is imperative to
incite change and overcome injustice in communities and throughout society. These key players
include congressmen, mayors, governors, and other political leaders; they are vital in the
development of public policy, and therefore, act as a crucial element when responding and
, assessing the public opinion surveys. These people offer adequate knowledge on the
effectiveness of decisions, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of the three-strike
sentencing, as well as how it is implemented in society. These people and how they serve their
citizenry make the difference in how changes affect society.
Seven survey questions and why the questions were chosen
1. Should the three strikes law apply to all felonies or just violent/assaultive/serious
felonies?
2. Do you feel financial aid that is provided to support the three strikes law is used
appropriately by legislators, local activists, and special interest groups?
3. Do you believe the three-strikes law has had a positive or negative outcome on the
criminal justice system?
4. Do you believe the three-strikes law has lowered violent/assaultive/serious felony
crimes?
5. Are you satisfied with the Legislative, Executive, and Judicial branch of the government
in creating, implementing, and enforcing the three-strikes laws and regulations not only
on a local level but also on a state, and federal level?
6. Do you believe the three-strikes law should apply to offenders with non-serious/non-
assaultive/non-violence crimes as well?
7. Any additional comments, concerns, or suggestions.
It is imperative to know and understand the key participants who play a part in the three-
strikes law. These people are expected to provide details as to how the law will work, how it will
benefit all people, and why it is needed. The seven questions listed above were chosen to provide
knowledge as it pertains directly to the three-strikes law in order to help the people gain a better
understanding of the law.
