Individual Course Project: Part 2

MIS540

Introduction

Google, one of the most well-known companies in the world, was founded in 1998 by

Larry Page and Sergey Brin [ CITATION Far19 \l 1033 ]. Google is predominately known as

an internet search engine; however, the company has expanded to offer a wide variety of

internet- related products and services. Today, Google’s net worth is approximately $420

billion dollars

[ CITATION Far19 \l 1033 ]. The company has over 250 locations all around the world and

has over 61,000 employees [ CITATION Far19 \l 1033 ].

Google has one of the most unique company cultures in the world and is often looked at

as an example. The workplace at Google is fast-paced and high-energy, but is also casual and

employee-centric [ CITATION Sch19 \l 1033 ]. One of the most interesting and innovative

employee programs at Google is called the 20% time program [ CITATION Sch19 \l 1033 ].

This program encourages engineers who work at Google to spend 20% of their working time on

projects that interest them, and more than half of all new products at Google were created

because of this program [ CITATION Sch19 \l 1033 ]. Some of these projects include the

email platform known as Gmail, the cloud storage service known as Google Drive, and the

satellite maps and directions services known as Google Maps [ CITATION Far19 \l 1033 ].

Google Maps is a web-based service that provides geographical information about Earth

using API (application program interface) and GPS (global positioning system) technologies.

Google Maps can be used to plan routes and gather directions for drivers, bikers, walkers, or

commuters using public transportation [ CITATION Tec13 \l 1033 ]. Google Maps can also be

embedded into other websites to provide location and directions. One way that Google has not

, utilized its Google Maps service is through a rideshare application. Ridesharing is the sharing of

rides in a motor vehicle with other people such as the existing rideshare applications, Uber and

Lyft. Google could utilize its own satellite mapping service to offer its own rideshare app; this

innovative technological solution could be called Google Hitch.

Background

To date, Google has operated as an organization that aims to “organize the world’s

information and make it universally accessible and useful” [ CITATION Goo21 \l 1033 ]. The

company’s mission statement indicates that the main goal of the organization is to provide its

users with a central hub for information and to make access to services all over the world

effortless. Google’s mission makes it ideal for buyers and sellers to search for goods and services

as well as to provide goods and services. However, Google’s priority has never been to be the

leading service provider. With Google Hitch, that priority would become front and center.

Google Hitch would transform Google’s main function as a place for service providers to reach

buyers to one that will make Google a leading service provider.

Innovation Opportunity

Google Hitch is a service-based app that will change the way that commuters search and

pay for their commuting needs. Google Hitch will allow users to enter their start and end

destinations to create the most efficient and affordable route. Google Hitch will also allow users

to purchase any required tickets directly through the app. Users will have the ability to apply

filters to their search that will allow them to customize types of transportations, areas to avoid,

multiple stops, and so much more.

In addition to offering commuters a quick and easy way to create travel plans and a place

to purchase tickets all in one place, Google Hitch will also incorporate its new ridesharing

service. Much like Uber and Lyft, Google Hitch will allow users to book safe and affordable
