Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis is a slowly progressive disease of the central nervous system,

comprised of the brain and spinal cord( Davidson, Slomski, & Cataldo, 2012). This disease can

make patients disabled and hard to do things are their own that they usually would do. It is an

unpredictable disease that many parts of the body, such as the brain and spinal cord, and vision

issues, balance, and some control of your muscle. People with this disease have an average

lifespan, but unfortunately, there is no cure, so they must take life daily. On the bright side, the

condition is not fatal, and people can have a life like others with the right treatments. With this

autoimmune disease, it is still unknown what the trigger. A few things can cause it, such as

viruses, environmental factors, and even genes. There is a higher risk that other people in your

family can have it, which leads to genes.

Today researchers know that MS is an autoimmune disorder that destroys myelin, the

insulating material surrounding nerve fibers( neurons). Myelin helps electrical signals pass

quickly and smoothly between the brain and the rest of the body. When the myelin layer is

destroyed, nerve messages are sent more slowly and less efficiently. Patches of scar tissue, called

plaques, form over the affected areas, further disrupting nerve communication( Davidson,

Slomski, & Cataldo,2012). With it being an autoimmune disorder, it is caused by our immune

systems. When there is damage to the myelin, it affects how nerve impulses flow. When this

happens, things that transfer from the central nervous system can be delayed or even not reach

where they need to be, causing MS, which is why it is essential to get treatment for it to make

day-to-day life manageable.
