This week we learned about the various ways that people can convey messages without

verbal communication. The ability to communicate nonverbally can be just as powerful as its

verbal sibling. Some examples include things like pointing, shrugging, or nodding your head;

these types of actions can both accentuate your verbal cues or be messages of their own. Outside

of your everyday social circles, you spend the most time around people in the workplace. These

include your manager/supervisor, coworkers, direct reports, or even customers. It is important

that we understand the effect that nonverbal communication can have in the workplace and how

we can use them to our advantage or avoid problems.



I currently work as a Business Analyst at a health care provider where I work in cross

functional settings at an almost daily basis. However, with the pandemic, all workers were asked

to work from home which only made the ability to collaborate that much harder. While working

from home was much more convenient, it also allowed for missteps after this transition.

Recently, my team and I were asked to report on our work load by filling out a daily work log

that documents what we spend our time doing throughout any given day. When our manager

explained the reasoning, there was nothing but silence; even from me! We just didn’t understand
