The article I have chosen is on Music Therapy and the benefit it offers and that is has
been increasingly offered as a component of palliative or hospice care at the end-of-life. The
patient population is patients in hospice or end-of-life cares and their families. Some correlating
factors were found in a study conducted as following; Researchers conducted a random
controlled trial test to evaluate the physiologic effect of Music Therapy in terminally ill patients
receiving palliative care. The patients were assigned either to live music therapy sessions or to
prerecorded mindfulness-based relaxation sessions. Patients in the music therapy group
experienced more substantial vascular sympathetic tone reductions, which was used as a marker
for increased relaxation and decreased pain (Ittner, Woten, 2018). It was also noted that a single
session of music therapy was determined by researchers to dramatically reduce agitation in
hospice patients (Ittner, Woten, 2018). While conducting the study concerning any current
diagnosis or comorbidities, it was founded that music therapy may effectively reduce pain in
palliative and end-of-life care. Still, it doesn't improve the overall quality of life in patients
receiving palliative care (Ittner, Woten, 2018).
It is essential that when this type of therapy is conducted that a patients culture is
taken into account, but as far as music therapy goes, according to the American Music Therapy
Association (AMTA), music therapy (MT) is the therapeutic, evidence-based use of music
provided by a person who has completed an accredited music therapy. Music therapists must
adhere to the AMTA Standards of Clinical Practice, which require a referral, assessment,
treatment planning, program implementation, and documentation, and need the music therapist to
undergo regular supervision and participation in continuing education (Ittner, Woten, 2018).
