Op het marktplein van Athene probeerde een menigte vrouwen en kinderen het lot
van het leger uit te vinden. Wat hun zonen en hun vaders waren naar Marathon
gegaan, waar de Mediërs oorlog voerden tegen de Atheners.
Op de agora was ook Nikomachos, een kind van tien jaar, en met hem zijn moeder.
Het kind hoorde het geschreeuw van de mensen: 'Het leger van de Mediërs is
ontelbaar groot.' 'De Mediërs zijn het sterkste.' 'Wat zullen ze doen? Ze zijn toch niet
van plan om Athene te vernietigen?' Nikomachos vroeg zijn moeder: 'De goden laten
dit soort dingen toch niet toe? We hebben immers altijd Athena geëerd en Apollo
en ...', maar hij maakte zijn woorden niet af. Want plotseling zei zijn moeder: 'Ik zie
een man.'
De Atheners wisten niet of de man een Athener was of een Mediër, maar tenslotte
herkenden ze hem: het was Pheidippides, de renbode van de Atheners. Nikomachos
riep hem: 'Pheidippides, je hebt toch niet zonder onderbreking van Marathon af
hierheen gerend?' Pheidippides hoorde het kind niet, want de inspanning had hem
uitgeput. Met moeite kwam hij naar de menigte en in slechts twee woorden berichtte
hij: 'Wees blij. We winnen.' Daarna viel hij neer en stierf.
De dood van Pheidippides deed de Atheners wel verdriet, maar ze waren vooral blij
met de overwinning. Nikomachos vroeg: 'Het is toch zeker nodig om Athena en
Apollo te eren?' en het kind overtuigde de Atheners; ze besloten dus om in Delphi
een schathuis te bouwen voor de buit van de oorlog.
