Jackie Robinson
o What Civil Rights issue were you involved in? – The color barrier in
professional sports.
o Why did you get involved in this area? (What is your background?) – In
1947, I became the first African American ever to play in the MLB (Major
League Baseball). Being the only black man in the league at the time, I was
held to certain standards out on the field. I was being mistreated by the refs,
opposing teams, and even players of the Brooklyn Dodgers. This made it very
hard for me to play the game that I love. I just had to do something about this.
o What contributions/problems did you make in your chosen area? – I won

Movement.

o How do you think you will be remembered in history? – My biggest

would like to say that I paved the way for African Americans to play baseball
as passionately as I did. There are now many ball players coming from the

same racial background as I did.

My father believed that the African American community could blossom into
a functioning society without the dependence of white people. I joined the
Nation of Islam, but I soon left after my viewpoints on their religion changed,
and I no longer advocated separation of the races and some of my other
opinions. I realized this was not my way to make an impactful contribution.
