Sus1501 Assignment 06 : Greenies
SAVE THE RHINO!
Student number: 65825012
Step 2
1. Tell us what your original answer to the question about was and why?
My original answer for Assignment 1 was option E: We must save the rhino because it is the
right thing to do.
Without rhinos the lands on which they preside will present a whole new different
landscape and become much more limited in the life it can support. They are an incredibly
valuable species that deserves the right to life just as other other species the land has.
When you eliminate one species an entire ecosystem is affected. Rhinos play a very
significant role as they are grazers, they consume amounts of vegetation, which helps build
the African landscape and most people also depend on the natural resources the land has
within rhino habitat for food, fuel and income. Besides imagine telling your children or
grandchildren that there once was a time when there were beautifult great animals and wild
forests and savannas. You just might be ready now to explain to them exactly why we led
them all into extinction, cut down all the forests and transformed the savannas into
shopping malls and parking lots.
2. Tell us what your current answer is and why?
My current answer is E: we must save the rhinos because it is the right thing to do.
After having read through this learning unit and in relation to previous units, my choice
remains the same. Although I learned about different perspectives, however, I cannot change
the way I feel. Whilst I now understand assignment 1, I stand by my answer from assignment 1
When our species go extincted or abandoned we will be likely leave behind an earth that is
so greatly reduced in wildlife species that it will look much similar to what was left when the
dinosaurs died off. This recognition should place upon us a strong moral responsibility to
protect other species from extinction. Rhinos also play an important role in the propagation
of the vegetation by eating the seeds and distributing them elsewhere through their matter.
South Africa has more Rhinos than any other countries, but they are being killed.
Change must be implemented as soon as possible.
3. Answer the question: "So where do I fit in in this?" (Think back to the
section on virtue ethics)
Extinction is a moral sin. Rhinos have more of an environmental impact than one might
think. The initial fact remains that Rhinos are not killed for food, they are not killed for
medicine (although some countries believe their ivory can cure cancer), they are killed in
mass quantities especially in South Africa for either sport, or decorative jewellery and
furniture and this shows that humans are only interested in themselves. We are polluting
