Unit D6165048 - Responsibilities of a care worker
Understand working relationships in care settings
1.1 Explain how a working relationship is different from a personal relationship
Building a relationship with someone means making a connection with the other person. This
is a basic human need. Each of the different forms of relationships is vital and plays a
valuable role in our lives. These can be family, professional, business, romantic and intimate
relationships as well as friendships. These will make us happy, satisfied people if they depend
on trust and the right treatment.
Due to its nature, working relationships are more formal and less flexible than personal
ones. They are contractually obligated together with different levels of responsibilities.
I always should be professional and respecting others when I am at work. Therefore, I should
leave my hard feelings outside the caring process, adhering to my patients’ care plan.
Working relationships are deeply regulated by legislation, the employer’s policies and
procedures as well as the professional codes of conduct. They are for the wellbeing of our
patients. Effective professional relationships enable well organised and efficient teamwork,
including building the team spirit.
We - as nursing assistants - can maintain professional boundaries by:
being reliable, honest and genuine
not discriminating against anyone
supporting our patients and helping them to make choices and decisions
encouraging patients to express their needs and wishes as well as listening actively and
carefully
extending our knowledge and improving our skills
respecting their believes and faiths
not forming inappropriate personal or intimate relationships with patients and
colleagues
not receiving presents or money from service users or their family/friends and not
giving those to them
asking questions when we are in doubt than doing something wrong
delivering a high quality of care including the promotion of patients to be as
independent as they can
protecting them from any possible harm and abuse
abiding by agreed ways of working
