Base conversion supplementary questions

1(a) 10AC in hexadecimal = 1000010101100 in binary

(b) 317 in octal = 11001111 in binary

(c) 1101000 in binary = 150 in octal

(d) 111010 in binary = 3A in hexadecimal

(e) Find the minimum number: (1001001)2, (75)10, (37)8 and (A7)16

Convert all to decimal = 73,75,31,167

Minimum = (37)8 = 31

(f) Which number in the following is possible in base 8?

i. 488 ii.317 c. 597 d. 189
317 is base 8, as no digit in larger then 7 e.g for base 16 no digit larger then F

(g) A number 152 is equivalent to (6A)16, then what is the base for this number 152

First take the hexadecimal number into decimal, then using trial and error get 152 into that decimal
number by changing the base of 152.So this answer would be base 8. As 152 in base 8 is same as the
hexadecimal.

Question 2:

Find the two’s complement numbers for the following decimal numbers (using 8 bits for

representations)

#convert to binary always then if its already positive just put a 0 as first bit to represent + (depending
on what bit number you want to represent for this example 8 bit) if it’s a negative decimal we
convert binary as well but we then invert the whole binary to get a new set of binary then with new
set only we then add 1 (and carry bits if needed) then we add 1 to the first bit to represent -.

i.16 = 00010000

ii. 78 = 01001110

iii.-99 = 10011101

iv.-45 = 11010011

Please convert 45 and 34 into binary numbers (8 bits), and then perform the binary subtraction by
subtracting the smaller number from the larger number. Implement the subtraction by adding two’s
complement of the number to be subtracted.

45 in binary 8bit = 00101101 34 in binary 8 bit = 00100010

= 00001011 45 – 34 is 11 and we know our answer is 11 in binary.

1) Convert 36.875 decimal into binary
