Eerste Bedryf
Tonneel 1, Knysna: In the bush there is thick mist making it ominous. We meet Elias and
Barta van Rooyen. Elias is a lazy man who forms an illegal plan to make money – he wants
to shoot an elephant. In this scene, Lukas van Rooyen goes missing, and the search parties
cannot find him because the mist is too thick and it becomes too dark. During this scene, the
narrator holds us in suspense and there is no sense of security.
Tonneel 2, Langekloof: At an ostrich farm some years into the future, we meet Fiela and
Selling Komoetie. Their farm is named Wolwekraal, and it is self-sufficient. Here they farm
wheat, corn, vegetables, sheep and goats. They have two ostritches named Skopper (male)
and Pollie (female). Two magistrate people come to this farm to do a census, and we know
them initially as Lange en Dikke. They see Benjamin Komoetie, a young white boy, and ask
Fiela why he has him. She responds by saying that God gave Benjamin to her. They tell
Benjamin that he must go to court in Knysna.
Tonneel 3 & 4, Knysna & Langekloof: The van Rooyens come to court to see who this child
is. The judge here is Mister Goldsbury. Benjamin arrives wearing a jacket, new shirt and
smart shoes. He has 5 shillings in his bag.
