DEVELOPMENT OF ONES SELF IN SOCIETY
IDENTIFYING STRESSORS
STRESS - is a reaction caused by ongoing or increasing new pressures and demands that eventually become more
than your coping skills - It is important to identify stressors because it is a good way to learn our coping mechanisms
Stress can cause:
• Constant anxiety
• Too much to do – feeling overwhelmed
• A feeling of no control
Stressors are pressures that lead to stress
EMOTIONAL STRESSORS
Stressors that include your feelings and thoughts or reactions to life crisis’s (being unplanned) as well as change –
this reflecting your personality and you image of yourself
Personality as a stressor:
TYPE A PERSONALITY
→ Competitive person who likes to achieve and succeed
→ Has set goals to aim and reach the top
→ They push themselves very hard
→ They like to be in control
TYPE B PERSONALITY
→ Easy going and takes things as they come
→ Often delays work and does things last minute (procrastinator)
→ They are optimistic and always expect the best to happen
→ The often joke with friends and are seen as “cool”
TYPE C PERSONALITY
→ Shy and non-assertive
→ They like to be alone
→ Give in to others to keep them happy
→ Interested in small details and how things work
TYPE D PRESONALITY
→ They are pessimists and often have a negative view on life
→ Easily irritated and often get depressed or sad
→ They like routine and hate change
→ They keep their feelings to themselves
SOCIAL STRESSORS
Refers to aspects in your relationship with others
Family – divorce or death in the family/ family responsibilities
Society – gender discrimination/ lack of work and poverty
Friends – unpopularity/ loneliness
Peers – peer pressure/ bullying
, ENVIRONMENTAL STRESSORS
The environment is everything around you – it is where you live and includes all the physical factors that may affect
you
Pollution – such as air pollution caused by traffic or water pollution from waste from factories
Natural disasters – fire, floods, and drought
Harmful living conditions – that lack basic facilities such as water and electricity and proper shelter
Noise pollution – such as cell phones ringing, building works and loud music
ASSESS LEVELS OF STRESS
POSITIVE/NEGATIVE STRESS
EUSTRESS – (positive) motivates and encourages you to do better as it releases adrenaline into the bloodstream to
give you energy and put yourself into action
DISTRESS – (negative) can reduce your performance levels and make you unproductive and can also make you
choose unwise lifestyle choices in order to cope with stress
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
Can be physical and can be seen or measured
LEVELS OF STRESS
Low level – able to cope with on a daily basis
Average level – currently coping (cause must be a focus)
High level – urgently apply stress management methods (unable to cope)
STRESS MANAGEMENT
DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION OF ONES OWN STRATEGY
1) IDENTIFY STRESSOR AND ASSESS STRESS LEVELS
First identify what is causes your stress – Identify your stressors and assess your stress levels – then look at how to
deal with each individual stressor
2) FOLLOW BALANCED LIFESTYLE
Means that you make time for your schoolwork, friends, family, exercise, maintain hobbies – prioritize schoolwork
3) MAKE TIME FOR PHYSICAL EXERCISE, RECREATION AND RELAZATION
Physical activity is one of the best ways to get rid of stress – stress can build up in your body – this increases blood
flow and oxygen to the brain and helps with flexibility while working as well as concentration
4) BALANCED NUTRITION
Have healthy food and regular meals – drink enough water
5) DEAL WITH YOUR EMOTIONS
Find an outlet for your feelings – exercise and get blood pumping
6) TIME MANAGEMENT
Identify time wasters and deal with them – avoid putting things off until later
7) GOOD RELATIONSHIPS
Support others and get support from them – remember your strengths and good qualities
