UNIT 1: PREPARING FOR SUCCESS: GRADE 12 EXAMS
REVISION OF OWN STUDY SKILLS
- Is the study method working – are you retaining information?
- Can you answer questions that you could not answer before?
- Are your priorities straight?
STUDY TIMETABLE - Make sure you have a developed study timetable weeks before you final NSC exams to prioritize
the subjects you will write first
• Allocate your breaks and times for relaxation – hours of sleep per night
• Show tutor sessions
• Every 30 mins take 5 minutes
• How many hours per subject and how many days until each exam
TIME MANAGEMENT - Make a commitment for what you will cut out before exams – e.g. Cut out TV
MOCK EXAMS
• Collect previous year examinations
• Set a time where you can uninterruptedly work under exam conditions - mark your own work
• Revise the questions you got wrong – ask a teacher if you still don’t understand
SUMMARIES - Make summaries of all your core content for your subjects – go over these regularly (note on your

- Go over each chapter in each textbook, do the exam practice and test activities – mark your work

ACTIVE LEARNING - Make sure you are actively learning –means you talk, ask, answer, write, draw, link and think
while you study
APPLY SQ3R STUDY METHOD
1. SURVEY
Before you read go through the whole chapter – look at the headings, pictures, introductions and summaries (you
have an understanding of what the chapter is about.
2. QUESTION
Ask questions – turn your headings into questions and write them down
3. READ ACTIVLY
Read with the aim of looking for the answers to your questions and underline the difficult words or ideas – highlight
the important facts and draw arrows to link ideas
4. RECITE AND WRITE
Say aloud what the main points are – write them down and the possible questions you could get on them
5. REVIEW
Test yourself by covering up the core facts and answers – see if you can recite the facts and answers – return to
review your notes and repeat what you have learnt in every 3 days, so you don’t forget work
