EVIDENCE OF BIOLOGICAL LINK WITH CRIME
• Amygdala: Associated with processing emotions and fear-learning. Co-ordinates
physiological responses based on cognitive information – flight or fight response.
• Lower amygdala volume is associated with aggression, violence and psychopathic traits
(Pardini et al., 2013).
WHAT ARE ATTITUDES?
Attitudes defined in different ways by different researchers.
• ‘The degree of positive and negative affect associated with a psychological object’
(Edwards, 1957).
• ‘A general enduring positive or negative feeling about some person, object, or issue’ (Petty
& Cassiopo, 1981).
• Attitudes can be implicit (unconscious) or explicit (conscious).
COMPONENTS OF ATTITUDES
Affective – our emotional reactions toward the attitude object (another person or a social issue).
Cognitive – our thoughts and beliefs about the attitude object.
Behavioural – our actions and observable behaviour toward the attitude object.
Attitudes are evaluative – they consist of positive and negative reactions to something People

be explicit or implicit.
