Community policing is a term not known to many. It is more than a practice or program
According to (Lawrence & McCarthy, 2013) “community policing is not a program; it is not a
set of activities; it is not a personnel designation. Rather, community policing is a law
enforcement philosophy, a way of thinking about improving public safety. While there is a lack
of standardization regarding specific terminology and strategies of community policing across
cities, community policing efforts can generally be grouped into three broad categories:
organizational transformation, community partnership, and problem-solving” (p.5). It is
important to understand this overall description of what is community policing because it paves
the way into the understanding of how issues such as Mental Illness or Race correlate to
Criminal Justice.
One of the key components of community policing as stated above is the partnership with
the community. The overall, topic of mental Illness influences the ability to forge a successful
partnership because police are forced to balance public safety and community service. According
to (Dempsy et al, 2019) “The criminalization of persons suffering from a mental illness continues
to be an urgent public health concern, a resource-draining, and an overarching societal issue, not
only in the state of California but also across the United States and the world” (p.1). It is
essential to distinguish public safety and community service when dealing with a vital but
vulnerable group. To help de-escalate incidents and better understand the different kinds of
mental illnesses so those police officers can respond to mental health-related situations
appropriately and without compromising and risking their safety. In the article Improving Police
Interventions During Mental Health-Related Encounters, data showed that at least one-quarter of
people shot and killed by police had a severe mental illness. (p.6). Also, the article Law
