Your first impression is imperative when it comes to how others may perceive you to be
which is formally known as person perceptions. An individual’s first impression can be also a
form of assumption that may create some form of prejudice which can determine how an
individual is treated amongst others. First impressions can be determined by your physical
appearance or just by the way an individual may speak in public.
The Halo Effect can be considered as a cognitive form of bias in which there is a positive
judgement about an individual’s qualities and traits. One example to consider is when an
individual is judged to have a higher morality because of how attractive they may look. This is
an example of a cognitive mistake because of individual prejudices as well as their social
perception.
When four areas of criteria’s are met it will eventually lead to decrease of prejudice. The
first criteria is that there needs to be an equal status amongst the groups. The second criteria is
that the group members will need to know each other on an individual level. The third criteria is
that the authority figures within each situation have to be able to show they that support the
group’s positive change. The fourth and final criteria is that each group will have to work
together and understand that there is a common goal amongst them.
It is important that groups have an equal status and also understand that one group could
not have more power than any other group in order to help decrease prejudice. According to
Dovidio, John, Gaertner, Validzic (1998), “creating a situation of cooperative interdependence
