Unit 5: Meeting Individual Care and Support Needs
Introduction:
In this
assignment, I will be explaining why it is important to have equality and diversity for individuals
with different needs, and also explain the importance of preventing discrimination for individuals
with different needs and explain the consequences of not preventing discrimination against
individuals with different needs. I will also be evaluating the advantages and disadvantages of
promoting anti-discriminatory practice.
P1:
Equality is treating all individuals equal especially with their rights, status and opportunities,
while doing this you also treat the individual with respectfully.
Diversity is accepting and respecting differences, these differences are not always in people it's
culture, religion, food, language and many other things.
Discrimination is when someone has a prejudice against a person or a group of people for
reasons such as age, ethnicity, social class, sexuality and more. They might then discriminate
against that person or group and treat them differently. There are four types of discrimination
unfair, indirect, direct and positive.
Unfair discrimination is treating an individual unfairly in comparison to another person. For
example not allowing a person to get a job because that person is homosexual even though they
have the same qualifications as the other candidates.
Indirect discrimination is when a person appears to be supportive but may show disrespect fro
their ideas.
Direct discrimination is when someone is rude or aggressive or offensive to someone because
they are different for example if someone has a disability and a person calls them offensive
terms.
Positive discrimination is when a decision is made in a persons favour because they are different
for example getting a job because you are a Muslim woman and the company want to seem more
diverse. (Haworth, E 2019)
It is important to promote equality and because it helps give individuals a sense of belonging
and the feeling of acceptance in society as they know that no matter what their needs will be
accounted for. Promoting equality is also important because it can help individuals who have
certain needs to understand that they are entitled to equal access to things that are available for
them and everyone. By promoting equality you are also showing individuals that you recognise
their differences and are able to make specific arrangements for the individuals which could
make them feel comfortable for example Tremayne has outbursts which can be disruptive to
others the community hospital could provide support to help Tremayne cope with his outbursts
and also make others around him during his outbursts feel comfortable and not scared.
,Furthermore, promoting equality is important as it helps individuals to feel safe, recognised and
not dismissed for example Valerie is scared to go home because she is afraid as she has been
bullied by local teenagers because of her weight, the community hospital could get a therapist to
see Valerie during her stay so she could talk about her worries by the hospital doing this they are
promoting equality as Valerie is able to access the help and be able to feel safe again.
Promoting equality is important as it can help individuals to feel confident and know that they
have support from various people, for example, Aisha had a health visitor go to her house and
check the standard of her living and then they were able to find out that she was living in dirty
and poor conditions, she then would be able to receive the right services to help her as she would
be entitled to help because of her vascular dementia. If any individual ever experienced
inequality they are able to deal with the situation and try to get the equality they deserve by
informing the people who support them such as their social worker. These people would also
make sure that the individuals gain the equality they deserve and broadcast and educate the
people who presented with attitudes that do not treat an individual with different needs equal.
Moreover, promoting diversity is also really important as it shows that you have an
understanding of the reason the individual is diverse and respect it, for example, Valerie is a
vegetarian which would have meant that the hospital would have had to provide her with food-
specific to her dietary requirement and the hospitals ability to provide her with specific foods
would show that they are diverse and accept differences and this would also make Valerie feel
better as she would not have to focus on trying to find vegetarian food but focus on getting her
health better. We endeavour to deliver high-quality hospital food and cater for a range of diets
and individual tastes. The Trust has won a number of awards for its food and prides itself on
offering tasty dishes from all countries and cultures.
(Hgs.uhb.nhs.uk, 2019) Highlighting that you respect the reason an individual with different
needs is diverse also shows that you value this diversity and welcome it making and individual
feel more comfortable within themselves and where they are.
Promoting diversity will also make an individual with different needs feel accepted within the
place they are and they could feel more inclined to teach people about what makes them diverse,
for example, Aisha is a practising Buddhist and the community hospital providing her with a
space where she can be spiritual and practice her religion would show that the hospital is
accepting of her religion and she will not be judged based o her religion which would make her
feel valued and then feel more secure and relaxed in the environment she is in and comfortable to
share her knowledge on Buddhism.
In addition to this promoting diversity will help an individual feel acceptance within themselves
as they know that they won't be judged upon by people, will promoting diversity it shows that
you are able to be educated and are open to learning about different individuals different needs
which can help make the individual feel important for example in a care home there could be a
, specific ethnic group of staff that help lead activities for individuals in the care home who come
from cultures and who have different heritages.
M1:
Discrimination is when someone has a prejudice against a person or a group of people for
reasons such as age, ethnicity, social class and others.they might then discriminate against that
person or group and treat them differently. There are four types of discrimination: unfair,
indirect, direct and positive.
Firstly, preventing discrimination is important as it helps individuals feel safe, secure, valued and
protected from harm this helps individuals feel more confident in the place they are in as they
know that their values and opinions will not be judged for example Aisha who is a practising
Buddhist may feel happier and confident in hospital as she is able to be proud of being a
Buddhist and not feel judged based upon her religious beliefs and is able to get the right amount
of care despite her personal views, she will also feel more confident when expressing her health
views with her service provider.
The individuals would also feel more included because they are being treated equally to
everyone else and this highlights that the individuals are just as important as everyone else.
Preventing discrimination is also extremely important has it can help boost individuals self-
esteem.“To boost your self-esteem, you need to identify the negative beliefs you have about
yourself, then challenge them” (nhs.uk, 2019)
By preventing discrimination you are able to help an individual feel more positive about their
differences and not feel negative about these differences then lead them to have a high self-
esteem and high self-worth, leading them to be more confident and comfortable about their
differences such as race, for example, Valerie is obese and by the hospital staff not
discriminating against her because of her weight and not judging her because she cannot see why
she needs to lose weight may help raise her self- esteem and confidence because she would feel
comfortable discussing these issues to members of staff.
Furthermore, preventing discrimination will also make and individual with different needs open
up to the people that are around them and supporting them for example in a hospital because
discrimination will be prevented at all possible means that an individual would feel comfortable
opening up and talking about their health issues leading to a better quality of care and the
individual would also feel safe disclosing personal information as they would not have a fear of
being judged or harmed. “All healthcare providers have a duty not to discriminate against you.
This includes medical staff, such as consultants, doctors and nurses.” (Citizensadvice.org.uk,
2019
Building on from this, it is vital discrimination continues to be prevented as in healthcare the
main objective is treating the individual and providing them with the best care possible and if
