Critical thinking
The ethical perspectives of both the National Football League (NFL) and Dr. Bennet Omalu
concerning the issue of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in professional football are the
following. There are many aspects of thinking but three important ones are reporting, inferring,
and judging.
The text defines a factual report as “describing the world in ways that can be verified through
investigation” (Chaffee, 2019, p. 161). The NFL perspective when it comes to reporting
regarding CTE is that there is no evidence to support that NFL players have died because of this.
The NFL conducted several research studies regarding concussions in the NFL. They used
monkeys with helmets and shook them real hard. They threw dogs, pigs, and cadavers down
elevator shafts. Helmets on crash dummies and it was determined that players do not get neck
injuries or brain damage. Dr. Omalu perspective is also the same that there is no evidence that
CTE is the cause of NFL player deaths. He conducted an autopsy on an NFL player whose death
was due to cardiac arrest, but he wanted to know why a man in his fifties lost his mind and killed
himself. He ordered a study of his brain and discovered a very damaged brain. He still did not
have any factual information.
