1e brief, reactie op tekst: ‘Pregnant women turn to Marijuana, perhaps harming infants’.
To the editor,
Almost 4 percent of mothers-to-be said they had used marijuana in the past month in 2014,
compared with 2.4 percent in 2002. This fact was in the federal survey, published online in
December. It’s a significant increase. A lot of drugs are bad for the health of people, especially
for children it is very bad for their health. Because of that I think pregnant women should avoid
Marijuana.
The first reason is that Marijuana is bad for the health of the children whose mother uses
Marijuana. In Marijuana is THC or tetrahydrocannabinol. THC can cross the placenta to reach
the fetus, potentially harming the brain development, cognition and birth weight.
The second reason is that children whose mothers uses Marijuana reach less good scores at
school. The children are more impulsive and less able to focus their attention than other
children and this at age of 10. At age of 14, the children have lower scores in math, reading and
spelling. The most parents wants their children to achieve good grades at school, but as the
woman uses Marijuana during pregnancy, there is a smaller chance that the children will get
good grades.
The counter argument is that the negative effects of Marijuana are not dramatic. I disagree with
this statement. Maybe the effects are not always dramatic, but there are a lot of risks for
mothers who use Marijuana and for the children whose mothers use Marijuana. Above, there I
have told some risks.
Now I have told about Marijuana is bad for the health of the children whose mothers use it and
Marijuana is bad for the scores at school of the children. And there are a lot of risks as the
mother uses Marijuana. With all these negative effects of using Marijuana, I think it is clear that
it is bad to use it. Pregnant women should avoid Marijuana!
