Critical Essay 2
MUS 1013

The English Oxford Dictionary defines the word art as “the expression or application of human

creative skill and imagination…producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or

emotional power” (English Oxford Dictionary) The word entertainment is defined as “the action

of providing or being provided with amusement or enjoyment” (English Oxford Dictionary).

While these definitions seem completely different, they have some overlap and similarities.

Music is something that has been around for as long as anyone can remember. As its popularity

grew, and different genres emerged, rock and roll music appeared and became one of the most

popular types of music. It has played a vital role in the entertainment business as well been

recognized as some of the greatest pieces of art in the world. The genre of rock and roll is a

combination of art and entertainment. To be classified as art, a song typically stands the test of

time, and has aspects that make the listener think and appreciate the music at a different level.

For entertainment, the song tends to try to involve the listener in some; the beat is danceable

and fun, or it’s an instructional song that gets the audience to dance around. Music by Ray

Charles, Buddy Holly, The Beatles, and Jimi Hendrix all exemplify this combination. The songs

discussed below show a wide array of art and entertainment.

Beginning with the artist Ray Charles, he created a blues and gospel song called “What’d I

Say”. When the song begins, it is all instrumental for about one minute. This gives the sense of

the song being more art than entertainment. Showcasing the extraordinary talents of the band

members creates a piece that can be appreciated by the listeners. But, as the song progresses, it

turns into more of an entertainment song. The song is upbeat, and fun, and the lyrics are simple

and catchy. At about three minutes the song is interrupted by some spoken words which give

the illusion Ray Charles is performing in front of a crowd. In this song, the lyrics don’t tell a

story, rather, they discuss images of woman dancing. This provides amusement for the listeners,

giving MUS 1013 the song an entertainment feel. The movie Ray depicts Ray Charles life, but

gets a few things wrong along the way. While Charles is a legend in the music world and has

helped pave the way for various artists, Ray puts an entertainment blanket across his life. The

movie misrepresents various people in Charles’ life, succumbing them to stereotypes instead of

the incredible people they were. They also modified the impact of Charles’ two mothers had on

his life, (Ritz, 2004). The fabrication of someone’s life to create a more interesting film tends to

be a typical trend in the entertainment world to make money. Similar to “What’d I Say”, the up-

tempo doo-wop song “Sh-Boom” by the Chords provides entertainment for its listeners. The

nonsense syllables in the song provide an energy that is easy on the ears and doesn’t provide

much significance to the song.

An example of a song that is both art and entertainment is “Jailhouse Rock” by Elvis Presley.

The song itself highlights Presley’s greatest qualities as an artist; a voice, performance and

dancing skills like no other. Presley and many of his songs have stood the test of time, which

corresponds strongly as to why this song is art. He is still known today as the king of rock and

roll, and several of his songs are very well known today. On the other hand, this song is also

entertainment as it has rhythmic variety and influences. It is a fun song, that has a danceable

beat to which incorporates rock and roll, swing, and other genres in between. The lyrics give a

sense of innocence during the fifties, when in fact they were not. Elvis sings about homosexual

relations inside of a prison, but no one was really aware of this until a much later time. This

song seems to have been written to charm and please the listener, which helps give it the
