appropriate?
The title “April Fools on Polar Circus” is appropriate for this essay because it highlights the main
plot of the story and provides a sense of irony within the piece as the climbers decide to climb
the Polar Circus mountain on April Fool’s Day.
2. Roddan writes that “the tango with fear makes me wise.” Does it, in your opinion?
Provide phrases that illustrate “the tango with fear.” What evidence is there that it
makes the climber “wise”?
“The tango with fear”, in my opinion, can make someone wise because facing one’s fears can
lead to wisdom. This can be proven in the quote “We use our ice axes to shatter our frozen
worlds into crystals of ice and fear. One of the strong pulls of ice climbing is the tremendous
range of feelings one is forced to endure”. Although new experiences can be frightening at
first, it is Roddan’s encounter with fear that makes her grow stronger and wiser. The more
life experiences one has, the more wisdom they can apply in their next adventure. In the
quote “Fear talks to me, whispers my weakness; it speaks of conditions, of my own mortality
—it whispers ‘hubris.’ Fear sharpens my senses. It dances through my body. It tunes me.”
Roddan explains how fear makes her feel. It makes her more mindful of the dangers she is
surrounded by and allows her to take a breath, analyze every alternative she has and figure
