When examining Little Snow White from a post-colonial perspective, it becomes clear that

the dwarves assert their dominance over Snow White, that the Queen attempts to prove she is

more beautiful than Snow White, and that Snow White establishes her superiority over the

Queen.

The evil Queen is extremely insecure and needs constant reassurance from her magic mirror,

who tells her that she is the “fairest in all the land”. However, as Snow White got older and

surpassed the Queen’s beauty, the Queen became envious of the child and hired a huntsman to

kill her. When that didn’t go according to her plan, she tried to kill Snow White on three separate

occasions. As confidant as the queen felt after each of her first two failed murderous attempts,

the magic mirror informed her that Snow White was way more beautiful than she. On the Queens

last attempt to kill Snow White, she was somewhat successful, as the Queen’s mirror confirmed

that she was now the most beautiful in all the land. However, that was short lived as the prince’s

servant, who was carrying the coffin on his shoulder, tripped, which caused the chunk of

poisoned apple to eject from her throat, which brought her back to life.

The dwarves used their power of being the providers against Snow White. They allowed

her to live with them under the condition that she became their housekeeper. In post-colonial

times, the gender roles were that women took care of the housekeeping, children, cooking,

sewing and knitting, while the men went out to work and finically supported the family. In

this story, when the dwarves returned from work and discovered Snow White’s barley

breathing body, they cut the corset and saved her life. However, they showed a lack of care

for her as they left her alone the next day to go back out to work with only a warning to not

open the door. It seemed that the dwarves had a lack of respect for Snow White, when they
