Unit 1: Communication
D2- Evaluating factors that influence the effectiveness of each interaction
There are several factors that affect communication. This can be like the noise which
surrounds you, such as people talking, and the lighting of the area; either being too
dim or too bright for service users. An appropriate environment is another factor that
needs to take into consideration when communicating. For example, if you were
talking about confidential information about a service user, you would have to go to a
private room and collaborate there instead of where service users are able to
overhear what you say. Cultural factors also affect communication. In Greece, we
are told that a high-five may be considered insulting as it represents you feeling
disgust of what you see. Disability is an essential factor to take into account. Health
and social care professionals such as teachers must make reasonable adjustments
to buildings and their way of teaching; this is in order to communicate with them
effectively as they will find the setting accessible. People who are drunk or have
taken drugs is another factor of communication which is very dangerous when trying
to overcome it. Lastly, emotional factors such as anxiety, depression or aggression
can largely affect your communication with others. For example, if service users see
you being aggressive, they may show aggressive factors as well; affecting your body
posture that you display to the public.
The factors that affected the communication in my interactions include noise, cultural
factors- the language barrier, emotional factors- mainly anxiety, and making an
appropriate environment. The noise barrier is found in my group interaction where I
was too busy trying to write the next questions; making myself have a hard time
hearing my surroundings. The cultural factor is found in my one-to-one interaction
where I am talking in English, but very badly, and in my own language called
‘Tagalog’. This resulted in me having a hard time coding the information the doctor
was giving me. I did not consider his disability when I told him off and yelled at him.
Emotional factors have affected communication in my one-to one communication.
This is when I start saying in my own language that what the doctor is saying is
confusing; resulting in him trying to make me less anxious by using easier words for
me to understand. Finally, making an appropriate environment is seen in the one-to-
one interaction. I was not able to create an appropriate environment when I was
speaking to Mr. Napper as he felt uncomfortable about the people around us staring
at him.
In my first parts of my interaction, negative factors displayed ineffective
communication. For example, this is seen where the doctor uses jargon. In this case,
medical terms such as German Measles. The GP should’ve taken into consideration
that I wasn’t very good in communication with medical terms. This had a negative
impact towards me because I didn’t know what the doctor was saying. Another factor
was the cultural barrier, mainly language, between me and the doctor. For example, I
start saying ‘Ang gulo’ which means ‘this is confusing’. The doctor will not have
known what I was saying and may interpret the words differently to what they really
mean. This is a negative impact for both of us due to the fact that we cannot
communicate effectively as we are not able to encode each other’s messages.
