Introduction
In this assignment I am asked to create a report in which I evaluate IoT systems from different sectors
including home and industrial/transportation.
There’s a lot of controversy at the moment about the Internet of Things (or IoT devices) and its impact on
everything from the way we travel around and run our errands to the way manufacturers manage inventory.
But what is the Internet of Things (IoT), and how does it work?
What is the Internet of things?
The Internet of Things is the idea of connecting any device as long as it has an on/off switch to the Internet
and to other connected devices. The IoT is a giant network of connected things and people – all of which
collect and share data about the way they are used and about the environment around them.
That includes a vast variety of devices of all shapes and sizes – from smart coffee machines, which
automatically heat your drink for the right length of time, to self-driving cars, whose sensors detect objects in
their path, to wearable smart watches that measure your heart rate and the number of steps you’ve taken
that day.
How does it work?
IoT devices are connected to an Internet of Things platform. It uses data from different devices and applies
analytics to share information with applications built to suit specific needs.
These IoT platforms can precisely tell what information is useful and what can safely be ignored. This
information is usually used to detect patterns, make recommendations, and detect plausible problems before
they occur.
