1. Prospero Quotes NBs
Prospero is the protagonist of the play. The deposed Duke of Ideas
Milan, the ruler of the island. He dominates the play both with
his physical presence and with his perfectly orchestrated plan which now
controls the course of events.

His brother Antonio in connection with Alonso the King of Naples, usurped him
forcing him to flee on a boat with his daughter. Prospero has spent 12 years on
the island refining the magic that gives him the power he needs to punish and
forgive his enemies.

**The name Prospero means to prosper/to be successful/fortunate. However,
his name is also an Anagram of Oppressor = Duality.

2. Miranda
Daughter of Prospero. She was brought to the island at an early age and has
never seen any men other than her father and Caliban. She is the only female
in the play. Miranda’s perceptions of other people tend to be naive and docile.

**The name Miranda means Admirable.

3. Ariel
Ariel is Prospero’s servant-spirit. He is associated with air, water, and fire. Ariel
has extraordinary magical abilities and Prospero leans heavily on him to
execute his revenge plot.
Þ Master-servant

4. Caliban
Caliban is Prospero’s servant. He is the son of the deceased witch Sycorax.
Caliban believes that the island is rightfully his and has been stolen by
Prospero. He is associated with the Earth and is treated as sub-human.
His character is: uncivilized, governed by instinct not intellect
Þ Master-servant

** The name Caliban is an anagram of Cannibal
