The Role of Integument in Protecting the Body

The integumentary system comprises of nerves, glands, nails, hair and the skin. The

primary function of the integumentary system is to protect the body from both mechanical and

chemical harm. The integumentary system does this by providing protection to the body from the

outside world. However, the integumentary system works with other systems of the body to

achieve effective body protection (Lopez-Ojeda et al.). The integumentary system works with

other subsystems within the body to perform its functions optimally and in effectively. Thus,

without other subsystems within the body, it cannot effectively perform its defensive function to

the body. Some of the functions of integumentary system are, body protection from dehydration,

body protection against infections and invasion and protection of the internal organs of the body.

One of the protective functions of the integumentary system is serving as immune

mechanism for the body. The integumentary system facilitates this through the secretion of oil

through the tiny glands in the skin. The secreted oil enhances the skin’s barrier functions. The

skin as part of the integumentary system also has the immune cells that is the first line of defense

of the body against infections and chemical harm. The skin also enables the absorption of

vitamin D into the body which is essential for healthy and strong bones (Lopez-Ojeda et al.). One

of the instances where the integumentary system works with other subsystems is in the

production of body oils through the tiny glands to protect the body against infections. The fats
