Arnett: Emerging Adulthood. A theory of development from the late teens through the
twenties.

DAPHNE:
Concepts:
- Erik Erikson: Prolonged adolescence in industrial societies + psychosocial
moratorium = During which young adult can find niche in society – free role
experiment. Without being explicit in a distinguish in adolescence and young
adulthood.
- Daniel Levinson: Novice Phase = 17-33. It’s the phase where you become an adult
(same as Erikson) in and built a stable life.
- Kenneth Keniston: Tension between self and society. Think of the demonstrations
Vietnam War. He thinks the term youth is problematic because it is ambigue.
Demographic:
- Criteria adulthood:
 Residence, carrier, married: It is hard to feel like an adult when you don’t have a
residence, carrier and married.  research has shown that this hasn’t to do
anything with the conception of adulthood. The named criteria is the least
important.
 Important criteria:
a. Responsibility
b. Independence decisions
c. Financial independence
d. Parenthood
 Self-sufficiency
- Identity exploration = Emerging adulthood is de period before identity exploration. It
is more than adolescence. The focus points are:
1. Love: In adolescence it is about doing fun things. In emerging adulthood it is
more about intimacy (emotionally and physically).
2. Work: Adolescence is about earning money. Emerging adulthood it is more about
professional development.
3. World views: This is a central part of cognitive development. Your college
education changes your child world views, but also if you don’t study this will
happen (ex: kids who doubt their religion).

,STUDEERSNEL:

Gaat over wat emerging
adult is.
Emerging adulthood is van
18-25 jaar. Niet zo strak
vastgesteld. Wordt
gekarakteriseerd door
onafhankelijk van je
ouders maar tegelijkertijd
heeft deze fase weinig
verantwoordelijkheid. Er is
in
deze fase ook sprake van
weinig zekerheden. Dit
beeld is alleen typerend
voor geïndustrialiseerde
maatschappijen doordat
hier genoeg financiële

,zekerheid is om dit te
ontdekken. Er is in deze
fase
ook veel verschillen tussen
mensen (wel of geen
kinderen etc).
In de fase van emerging
adulthood wordt een echt
eigen wereldbeeld
ontwikkeld en hiermee ook
de
eigen ontwikkeling.
Relaties worden meer
serieus
Werk en financiën worden
ook meer serieus en meer
lange termijn.

, Bij uitvinden identiteit ook
meer risicogedrag.
(sensation seeker)
Waarom is emerging
adulthood niet hetzelfde
als adolesentie?
Vroeger werden mensen
sneller volwassen dus
minder tijd voor emerging
adulthood.
Eerder begin van de
puberteit.
Voor iedereen ongeveer
18-19 jaar einde
middelbare school
periode(in Nederland).
Emerging adulthood gaat
meer over emotionele
