,Umugqa (line) 8: They never want to see other people achieve something/ They
never want to see someone achieve something great/good.
Izinto okumele uzazi >< Things you need to know:
1. Isakhiwo senkondlo: The Structure of the poem:
Le nkondlo yakhiwe ngesitanza (Stanza) esisodwa. This poem is only made
up of one stanza.
Inemigqa (lines) eyisishigalombili, ayilingani futhi ivalekile ngoba
ineziphumuzi/izimpawu zokuloba. It has 8 lines, the lines are unequal (length-
wise) and it has punctuation marks (iziphumuzi/izimpawu zokuloba) meaning
the lines are closed ‘ivalekile’. NB Punctuation marks could as slow down or
increase the pace of the rhythm. Izimpawu zokuloba zingayenza isigqi
(rhythm) senkondlo ukuthi sisheshe (fast) noma sinense ( slow).
2. Indikimba yenkondlo: The theme of the poem:
Umona – Jealousy.
Ukuziphatha kwabantu balolu hlobo bavamise ukwenziwa umona. Imbongi
iyasho ukuthi ‘Abafuni ukubona omunye umuntu enotho’. The way the actions
of people that are described in the poem give us an idea that it is because of
jelousy. The poet (imbongi) further substantiates this by ending the peom by
saying ‘They never want to see someone achive something/ something good’.
3. Umoya wenkodlo: The tone of the poem:
Umoya walenkondlo ngowokwexwayisa. Imbong ixwayisa abafundi
balenkondlo ngabantu abazimpisi, abayingozi. The poet is warning the
readers of the poem about haters, jealous people, two-faced people and the
danger/threat that they may pose.
Umoya walenkondlo uphinde ubengowobuhlungu ngenxa yezenzo zohlobo
lwabantu abanjalo. The poet also shows a painful tone this because of how
these people act.
4. Uhlobo lwenkondlo: The type of poem:
Yilirikhi—ngoba kulenkondlo imbongi iveza imizwa yayo ngalolu hlobo
lwabantu abayizimpisi. Yilirikhi, This is so because the poet expresses his
feeings about haters, two-faced people, jealous people, hypocritical people
(izimpisi)
Yisathaya—ngoba imbongi igxeka izenzo zabantu abafana nezimpisi.
Yisathaya, This is so because the poet is criticizing the actions of these
jealous people.
5. Izimpawu: The symbols:
Izimpisi—Hyenas/Wolves
o Izimpisi zimela abantu abenza sengathi bayakuthanda kantu
bayakukhohlisa.
o The hyenas/wolves symbolize the people who will ask as if they
like/love you and yet behind your back, its a different story, they
symbolize hypocrites.
Imvu—Sheep
o Imvu imela umuntu onomoya omuhle nenhliziyo ezinhle.
o The sheep is a symbol of kind-hearted people.

, Imbongi iphinde isho ithi, 'Azifuni
ukubona omunye umuntu enotht'.
ikhuluma ngokuthi laba abantu
abafuni ukubona abanye
bephumelela. The poet also states
that these type of people usually don't
like seeing other people do well or do
better than them. This a translation of
the last line of the poem.
Imbongi ithi laba abantu bafuna
ukuba nawe umakumnandi kodwa
uma usebunzimeni abanandab Inkondlo ikhuluma ngabantu
nawe. Lokhu kukhombisa ukuthi UMQONDO abenza sengathi bayasithanda
bayizenzisi. The poet states that OSOBALA: kanti bayasikhohlisa. This poem
whenever things are going well for talks about the people who act
you, they want to be around you, MAIN IDEA OF as if they love us whereas they
surround themselves with you but THE POEM: are just being fake.
once things go downhil, they won't
bother themselves helping you.
This shows that they are
pretenders (abazenzisi)
Imbongi iveza lowomqondo ngokusebenzisa impisi
njengophawu lwabantu abakhohlakeleyo, abanenhliziyo
ezimbi. The poet shows this by using hyenas/wolves as
symbols representing people who are cruel and evil-
hearted.
Umyalezo walenkondlo:
Imbong iyaxwayisa abafundi balenkondlo ngzimfamona ngoba kusukela
ekuqaleni abakaze bakuthanda, bahlezi bekufisela izinto ezimbi.
The poet is warning the readers about people who are two-faced, haters
and evil-hearted and about how they never loved/ had good intentions
from the beginning, they have always had bad intentions.
Iphinde futhi ikhulume ngokubaluleka kokuba nabantu abanjengabo
empilweni zethu ngoba yibo laba abantu abasenza sifune ukwenza
kahle/siphumelele empilweni zethu.
The poet also states that such people in our lives gives us the drive/ the
motivation to do better/ to want to do well in life.
