P1 Explain how the application of relevant principles and values will enable
professionals to provide holistic support for individuals who use social
services.
In this task I will be explaining the application of principles and values which will
enable professionals to provide holistic support for individuals who use social
services, to make sure they make certain decisions themselves...
Case study 1
Ravi is a 75-year-old female who speaks fluent Hindi and very little English, she
moved from India to the UK a few years ago to live with her daughter, However, her
daughter is no longer able to look after her as her health has deteriorated for the last
few days, An assessment was carried out on her in which the social worker agreed it
will be best if she stayed in a nursing home, Ravi used a wheelchair because she
was once involved in an accident that left her paralysed from waist to down, later on,
she developed dementia and before she started developing dementia she used to
feed herself, bathe and change her clothes herself but now she forgets to do those
things, Ravi also suffers from Parkinson’s disease which makes it difficult for her to
feed herself, Ravi also wears incontinence pad due to her weak bladder she’s really
ashamed and embarrassed by it. Due to all Ravi’s ailment she’s undergoing
specialist treatment, she’s is seeing a neurologist for her Parkinson’s disease and
also a psychologist for her dementia treatment, her GP is aware of her weak bladder
problems, Ravi needs assistance in day to day tasks, Ravi is a practising Hindu she
prays in the morning at her mandir which is her place of worship it is a clean and
designated area for her, she will need assistance getting to her place of worship in
the mornings, Due to her faith and worship Ravi does not eat meat or eggs, she
enjoys eating spicy foods and potatoes, Ravi also likes to watch Bollywood movies
and listen to Bollywood music, when Ravi was younger she worked as an air hostess
for India airlines, she enjoys travelling and has many memories of her travelling
days.
In Ravi’s case we would look at the relevant principles and values that will enable
professionals to provide holistic support for Ravi who uses social services, such steps
include;
Empowerment; empowerment means the process of providing vulnerable people
with the right to make and form their own decisions according to their needs, this is to
make sure that the individuals.feel confident enough to make choices and do things
themselves to build their self esteem and confidence and also to make sure they can
be confident enough to care for themselves for example even with all ravi’s ailment
and condition she should be allowed to do some things herself like feed herself
,dress herself and even try to bathe herself ,empowering vulnerable individuals can
prove difficult,so health and social care workers in the health setting have to be
patient, cheer up an encourage ravi up.

Promotion of rights: This involves giving patient the right to make decision and
choices of their own when it comes to their own care for example if Ravi wants to
change her pads she should be able to call for help and she will be attended ,since
due to Ravi’s faith she does not eat meats or eggs her decisions should be
respected and she should not be given such foods and even when she needs
assistance to go to pray or she needs the place in a certain way her decisions should
be respected.in an health and social care setting by doing this, that means they are
promoting Ravi’s rights.
Recognition of preferences: In any health and social setting individual needs
varies from each service user which means that every individual in an health setting
will have different needs and preferences which has to be fulfilled to the individuals
taste and also to ensure that their needs and wants are met up to which paves way
to better care services.for the individuals in the setting as in the case study Ravi
does not eat meats or eggs due to her religious faith so all foods that should be
given to her in the care home should not be containing eggs or meat ,she prays
every morning and evening in her designated place so that means that all her
designated place must be kept clean and tidy and most of all she must be taken to
pray in her designated area in the morning and evenings that way her preferences
are recognised she wont feel like her needs are not well met up to .
Involvement of individuals in care plan In an health and social care setting the
patients ,opinions and feelings has to be considered when making a care plan for
them to ensure they do not feel any discomfort and ensure that they get the proper
care they deserve
In reference to the case study Ravi should be asked about how she feels on how she
is being cared for by her social worker ,psychologist and most especially care
workers in the care home ,this way she will be able to fully express her feelings and
steps will be taken to eradicate any support she finds discomfort in or support she
feels she doesn’t get at all .
Promotion of choice: it is important that individuals in the care setting have the
opportunity to make choices on what they want and also decisions regarding their
care then.
For example in Ravi’s case she should be involved in the decision of what care
home she would like to stay in,choices of food in the care home also as she doesn’t
eat eggs or meat,Ravi should also be able to make decisions when it comes to her
health conditions the doctors should be able to give her options on which drugs or
treatment she will prefer over the other, this way they are promoting her choice that
means any Decisions made on her health and care needs is according to consent
and to her personal needs.
Anti discriminatory practices This involves making sure no one is being
discriminated against in reference to race, religion etc,
