Time
• Time is important in teaching because the sequence of events helps to
understand the past as well as the present
Example:
• The Apartheid Era. Learners need to understand the laws of apartheid and
study that had occurred. To gain full insight on the apartheid ideology and
identify the negative effects it had in our country; learners must be able to
link events to present situations.
People were separated according to race and forced to live in different areas,
many of them lost their homes. This led to the unfair distribution of services
in different areas according to racial groups. Whites were living in more
prominent areas and were given the best services. The African were forced
to live in homelands away from towns and cities were given no basic services
such as homes, clean running water and sanitation.

Change in history
Change in change can be defined as a state of transition moving towards a new
condition without breaking away from the historical past.
The concept of change can be achieved by studying local history. Learners must be
made aware of changes that take place in their lives over a period. Example: the
emotional strain an individual must go through, during the transition from primary to
secondary school. The learners must know adapt to a new environment and new
learners and teachers. This is a great change.
Example:
1.The change in South Africa’s constitution system since 1994.
Learners need to understand the cause and events that led to the change in South
Africa’s constitution. South Africa was ruled by a white government under the
leadership of F.W De Klerk which implemented the Apartheid Era. The government
passed harsh racial laws as the group areas act, separate amenities act and the bantu
education act. These laws were oppressive and unfair to all non-whites living in South
Africa during the Apartheid Era. Services were distributed unequally making it hard
for majority of the population who wanted change and equality. They began resisting
Apartheid (Defiance campaign). This continued till 1994 when the first democratic
elections were held. For the first time non-whites were allowed to vote. The ANC
won the elections and Nelson Mandela became the 1st African president. A new
constitution was drawn up. The progression from Apartheid government to a
democratic government has enabled the constitution to provide equal rights for all
South Africans irrespective of race and color. The government at present is trying to
eradicate the grievances of the past. Learners must be aware that these changes
affect their lives as well. They are living in a democratic country with a constitution
that equal to all. This why we celebrate public holidays in memory of apartheid
events and heroes. Street names have been changed to honour them example:

Empathy can be traced back to 1897, a German philosopher used the word
‘’infusing’’ to refer to a person who loses self-awareness in the process of observing a
work of art and becoming totally absorbed in it.
Empathy is used in history to make learners aware that what happens in history
depends greatly on human feelings’, emotions, and insight. It is also useful in helping
learners express their emotions and have intuitive understanding rather than
excelling at the logical responding process. Empathy involves the learner’s ability to
enter and appreciate the past. Empathy enables learners to imagine historical
circumstances, say how he/she would do and why he/she would do certain things if
he/she was placed in the circumstances.
