, Theme of the Unit
The Douglas School District incorporates the Common Core State Standards Initiative of
English Language Arts Standards into their classrooms. That is why when Ms. Colby became the new
teacher of the 1st grade class there, she began to incorporate those standards into her curriculum. Once
students reach the 1st grade, they should have somewhat of a greater understanding of how to write a
little and how to read. These skills may not be perfect but with the theme of The Giving Tree book as
her lesson for the month of September, Ms. Colby can really help enhance each student’s language arts
skills.
Creative Arts Lesson Plan
Ms. Colby’s 1st Grade Class Lesson Plan at Douglas
School District
Content Area or Developmental Focus: The content area and developmental focus will be
working on the student’s language arts skills, to include reading, vocabulary, writing, social skills
memorization & story reenactments.
Age/Grade of Children: 6–7-year-olds in 1st Grade
Length of Lesson: Each lesson will be one hour long, however, the project themselves will take
approximately two weeks, to do all the research and set up for the play.
Goal To follow the school districts’ curriculum guide in an inspiring and creative
way. Also to ensure the students grasp a story and are able to write about it,
verbalize it, and reenact it through memory.
Objective Students will be able to better read, recite, and even reenact stories that will
increase their speaking and vocabulary skills.
Standards Included The standards that I will be implementing are English Language Arts standards
from the states common core initiative. What this means is that I will develop
a lesson plan for language arts that takes a book we read in the class, for
example The Giving Tree, & allows the students to implement problem-
solving, and critical thinking by doing research and writing about what they
remember from the book. From there we all work together as a class to create
a play based off the book to present to our other classes and families. Finally,
they will write a one paragraph essay stating what they enjoyed and what they
learned by doing this project.
Materials Some materials we will need are the book, paper and pencils, art material to
decorate for the play, and finally access to the library and to a computer to do
research for the play.
