McLean Hospital’s first patient
Date: October 6, 1818
Summary of According to McLean (2021), on October 6, 1818 the Charlestown branch of
Event Massachusetts General Hospital, now known as McLean Hospital admitted its
(150 words) first patient. The curing of this patient would later lead to more patients, and
shed light on the term “mental illness.” Street, W. R. (1994) describes the
father of the young man admitted to believe his son was possessed by the
devil. This would explain the controversial beginning of mental disorders.
People used to have similar ideas to that of being possessed before the
introduction to treatment. This facility would then establish one of America’s
first laboratories of experimental psychology. Rufus Wyman was the first
superintendent, and the hospital supported an active research program which
led to more answers and clarity to mental disorders. The first patient is the
mark in history that was the beginning of a change to treat those who were
suffering from sicknesses that were not understood, or misunderstood (mental
sickness).
Influence in 1. Therapy is now one of the most well-known practices in psychology. When
Psychology someone mentions psychology, or psychologists in current society, the first
(150 words thing that often comes to mind is therapy. We picture someone sitting down,
each) making notes while the person with emotional struggles speak. While this is
known as talk therapy, they are many kinds of therapies. Totero, A. (2013)
explains an area where therapy can assist tremendously. Marriage, and family
therapy focuses on interpersonal relationships. The therapists in these fields
can assist during a divorce, family conflicts, grief, and even pre-martial
counselling. This therapy focuses on relationships, and its affect on an
individual’s decision-making process. Take for example John who grew up in a
divorced home, he might have some issues with getting married if his parents
had a rough divorce, and he witnessed it all. His fear of a failed marriage can
be overcome by seeing a marriage, and family therapist for pre-martial
counselling.
2. For the longest time, children with mental disorders were viewed with
stigma, and some places around the world unfortunately still view special
needs children this way. Children with these needs were kept out of school.
With the rise of research and education in this field, the stigma is slowly being
diminished. Logan, J., Lin, T., & Kaderavek, J. (2014) explains the benefits for
preschoolers with special needs from peers’ strong language skills. This means
that it won’t be a bad idea to place children with special needs in a normal

, classroom setting.
However, the
concern is whether or
not special needs
children can hinder
the development of
strong language skills
among children
without special
needs. Depending on
the nature of the
mental illness, some
students might be
found appropriate to
attend a special needs
school where
teachers are trained
to better meet the
needs of these
children. This is all
possible from the
effects of the first
mental hospital, and
patient.
3. Other than
therapy, treatment is
also used for mental
illness. They are
medications that
help with emotional,
and hormonal
imbalances.
Psychiatrists who
have been through
medical schools are
able to prescribe
medications to
