According to Roosevelt, what are the characteristics of a progressive?

“Every man who fights fearlessly and effectively against special privilege in any form is to that

extent a Progressive.” (Roosevelt, 1912). According to Roosevelt a progressive is someone who

stands for the betterment of the people. He believed in the right for people to governor

themselves. Roosevelt goes on to explain that by saying, “The essential difference, as old as

civilized history, is between the men who, with fervor and broad sympathy and imagination,

stand for the forward movement, the men who stand for the uplift and betterment of mankind,

and who have faith in the people.” (1912).

Explain and give examples of the characteristics of "anti-progressives."

Anti-progressives were known as “reactionaries” people who supported privileged treatment.

Roosevelt stated that next to progressives stood those (anti-progressives) who distrusted people

and wished to keep them bound and helpless for their own benefit. (1912). Men who lacked

vision, sympathy, and any interest in social justice and equality.
