Perception PSYC-304

1. Describe the process of perception as a series of steps, beginning with the environmental
stimulus and culminating in the behavioral responses of perceiving, recognizing, and acting.

Perception refers to the brain's ability to receive, organize, and distribute an outside
stimulus or sensory information to a specific area of the cortex for interpretation to produce a
conscious experience. (Rose M. Spielman, Apr 22, 2020) it can also be described as an
individual's interpretation of a sensation (Clark, Douglas, Choi. 2018). Through perception,
individuals can make judgments about the environment that surrounds them and identify things
like shapes and colors through vision, noises, and sounds through hearing, and flavors and smell
through tasting and smelling. Most of the things an individual perceives are the product of loads
of information received through sensation receptors located in each of our senses. However,
sensory sensations nor always generate perception.

Perception occurs in a few simple steps. There are two ways our brain can process one
received stimuli; Top-down and bottom-up processing. Top-Down refers to the process of
perceiving a stimulus and interpret it based on previous knowledge. If the brain is presented with
an unknown stimulus, it will need to be adapted and integrated with similar information until
creating a unique form of understanding the stimuli. This process is called bottom-up processing.
(Rose M. Spielman, Apr 22, 2020). The form in which our brain interprets information will
depend on the type of information used by the brain to make sense of the stimuli.

From a physiological perspective, most of the information received by stimuli is
processed by higher levels in the nervous system located in the brain (Clark, Douglas, Choi.
2018). When the brain receives a sensory stimulus, for example, from sensory receptors like taste
receptors; the stimulus travels through a sensory pathway creating action potentials; these action
potentials travel along neurons and pass information through synapsis to the area in the brain that
is dedicated to interpretation for that particular stimulus. Once the information is received is sent
to the thalamus, which is the dispatching base for sensory information. Then the thalamus
transfers the rest to the specific area of the cortex. (Clark, Douglas, Choi. 2018) which will than
be translate into a response or behavior.

electrical wires conduct electricity, it is tempting to equate the two. Compare and
