INF 220: IS Principles
IoT Transportation
Before discussing how (IoT) is changing the transportation system, we must define what
IoT is. The definition of IoT is an addition of the internet and other network connections to
different sensors, devices, or objects allowing even the simplest of objects, such as lightbulbs,
locks, garage doors, the ability to compute, and be controlled remotely. "The Internet of Things,
or IoT, refers to the billions of physical devices around the world that are now connected to the
internet, all collecting and sharing data." (Ranger, 2018) I will explain what IoT and
Transportation have to do with each other. I will discuss transportation, how it has improved
since it has been working with IoT.
Transportation is one of many vital IoT commodities. IoT has opened the transportation
industry to Smart Sensors that detect traffic congestion, GPS tracking for vehicles, WiFi sensors
that allow vehicles to be outfitted with a wireless connection, as well as sending and receiving
relevant data. With these sensors, it makes the fleet more high-tech, where it can send
notifications to drivers when there might be an obstacle ahead on their GPS maps such as an
accident or traffic jam. By joining the analog and digital worlds together, we have created a new
type of operation. Along with this new type of operation, we have increased efficiency, a high
level of safety, and green environmental plans, consumer's lives will be improved, and everyone
will be able to save money. With the technology for transportation increasing, companies will be
able to efficiently allocate their budget on shipping. It will also grant transporters access to
information about their destinations and the routes along the way.
, IoT transportation, has provided better-quality communication, information delivery, and
control. Railroads and Mass Transit are great examples that brings top-notch integration and
performance through its companies and their workers. Roadways are the primary focus. IoT
allows for observation to be analyzed of the flow of traffic by using information passed through
devices on the routes. Installation of cameras to catch traffic violators have been in particular
areas to find people who run red lights, speed, and accidents.
"Transportation is where smart cities are likely to see some of the most innovative and
disruptive use cases involving the IoT. From the wealth of valuable, new data being gathered
from both infrastructure and connected vehicles to the trend of moving away from private
vehicle ownership, to the growth of AI for predictive decision-making, the coming years promise
to bring many fascinating developments in the ways we travel around our cities and beyond."
(Connor, 2018). Some of the advantages IoT transportation will have will be new revenue
streams resulting from fewer transport vehicles on the road, minimizing the damages on the
environment, while promoting a more significant partnership where technology and environment
are now as one.
"In 2017, nearly 60% of all installed IoT devices in smart cities were used in smart
commercial buildings and transportation. By 2020, smart cities will use 1.39 billion connected
things to deliver sustainability and accomplish climate change goals" (Koeneman, 2017). Smaller
municipalities have relied on IoT heavily. It not only helps the environment; it helps public
transportation decrease the costs, such as upkeep and fuel charges. This shows that IoT
transportation is solving market issues.
