An abscess is a localized collection of pus. When you are in acidosis, you will have
excess acid in the blood. The opposite of acidosis is alkalosis, which is when you have a excess
of base in the blood. Perfusion is the blood flow through the pulmonary capillary bed. Atelectasis
is the collapsing of a lung. Bronchiectasis is the dilation of a bronchus distal to a site of
obstruction. Dyspnea is shortness of breath, and the patient is aware. Apnea is when you stop
breathing. Orthopnea is difficulty breathing while in a recumbent position. Hemoptysis is
coughing up of blood. Empyema is pus in the pleural cavity, often a complication of pneumonia

Respiratory acidosis is a condition that occurs when the lungs cannot remove all of the
carbon dioxide the body produces. This causes body fluids, especially the blood, to become too
acidic (Respiratory Acidosis, n.d.). People with chronic respiratory disorders typically suffer
from acidosis because the lungs help with acid-base balance by regulating the amount of CO2 in
the blood. If the patients have diseased lungs, their bodies won’t be able to regulate the amount
of CO2.
Based on Jose’s lab values and medical history, I suspect pulmonary fibrosis or
respiratory acidosis. His labs show elevated RBC’s, which is a sign of pulmonary fibrosis. Jose
likely has elevated Hb because he has a long history of smoking. His pCO2 is elevated because
he’s been short of breath, and this can be a sign of respiratory acidosis. A depressed value in
pO2 indicates hypoxia. Since Jose also has had several respiratory infections over the last few
months, this would also make sense as to why there are fibrotic changes on his chest x-ray.
