Week 4 Assignment

Petechiae is the occurrence of tiny, pinpoint hemorrhages in the skin. An ecchymoses is a

large area of hemorrhage into the skin. Hematocrit is the ratio of the volume of red blood cells to

the total volume of blood. A reticulocyte is an immature red blood cell without a nucleus, having

a granular or reticulated appearance when suitably stained. Stem cells are undifferentiated cells

of a multicellular organism which is capable of giving rise to indefinitely more cells of the same

type, and from which certain other kinds of cell arise by differentiation. An amyloid is a protein

produced in a variety of diseases but commonly with increasing age. Epistaxis is a simple

nosebleed. Hematuria is blood in the urine. Hematochezia is when you have blood in your fecal

matter. A hematoma is a localized collection of blood that like a bruise. Virchow’s triad is a

endothelial cell injury. DIC is a condition in which damage to endothelial cells causes

widespread activation of the clotting cascade with subsequent formation of microthrombi in

small vessels.

Anemia is defined as a decrease in the circulating red blood cell mass. The major

categories of anemia are iron-deficiency anemia resulting from dietary deficiency, and iron-

deficiency anemia resulting from chronic bleeding, for example from the uterus or

gastrointestinal tract. “A complete blood count measures hemoglobin and mean corpuscular

volume. Hemoglobin of less than 13 grams per deciliter for men and less than 12 for women is

diagnostic of anemia” (Iron-Deficiency Anemia | NHLBI, NIH, 2019). “In anemia, a decrease in

the number of RBCs transporting oxygen and carbon dioxide impairs the body's ability for gas

exchange. The decrease may result from blood loss, increased destruction of RBCs (hemolysis),

or decreased production of RBCs.” (Maakaron, 2021).
