The 2020 Pandemic changed the world as we knew it once before. With the rapid increase of
infected patients and the lack of adequate supply across the world showed everyone just how
unprepared our healthcare systems was. As a health care provider the number one goal is to
supply the best care to our patients; going above and beyond the means. Health care is ever
changing, from policy & procedures, to equipment & supplies, down to technology &
communication. We are always implementing new innovations that improves patient care while
simplifying the process and lowering cost. Nursing Informatics plays a vital role in the process of
innovating and upgrading technology in our health care system.
The building blocks of nursing is Science and technology. Science; being knowledgeable and
competent on how to research and navigate through systems for decision making and care plan
solutions. Technology provides us with the proper equipment for procedures, computers, iPad’s
& phones for patient, nursing, and physician communication. “Nursing informatics is the
synthesis of nursing science, information science, computer science, and cognitive science for
the purpose of managing and enhancing healthcare data, information, knowledge, and wisdom to
improve patient care and the nursing profession.” (McGonigle, 2017, pg.99).
I have been a healthcare worker for the last 6 years at Texas Children’s Hospital located in what
is known to be the largest Medical Center in the world. People from all over the world travel to
the Texas Medical Center (TMC) with the hopes of being provided with the best care possible.
