Deponent Verbs
Passive Revision
To properly understand deponent verbs, it is essential that we have passives under our
belts. So here is a speedy revision to help you along:
There are two voices in Latin: the active ands the passive. In the passive voice, the
subject is on the receiving end of the verb - it is getting the action done to it.
puer a puella pulsitur - the boy is kicked by the girl.
There are three tenses you need to know in the passive - the present, imperfect and
perfect. However, you only need to know the 3rd person singular and plural - here is a
table of just those parts.
perfect portatus sum monitus sum tractus sum auditus sum
portati sunt moniti sunt tract sunt auditi sunt
Practise Exercises
1) cibus a pueris consumebatur.
2) villa nova hic aedificatus est.
3) omnes cives clamoribus hostium terrentur.
4) murus ab hostibus nunc deletur.
5) vox regis numquam iterum audietur.
