Outcome 2.1
Campaigns are made by people who feel the need that there needs to be changes made to
certain things, this could include tragic events, environmental impacts, or to support women
or men in certain circumstances or other. There are 6 main types of campaign these are...

The unlock campaign is a campaign that made changes in policy. The policy they changed
was the rehabilitation act 1974. They campaigned using several different types of methods.
One of them is the newsletter which provides an update of news at unlock. A strength of
them using this type of method is that it provides people with personal stories they can rely
on if they need to prove their rights to something. However, there is no way of checking if
these personal stories posted on the newsletter are actually accurate or have happened
before. An example of a success story is Charlotte’s story who experienced difficulty getting
into university because it asked for criminal records and according to the recent law which
the recruiting staff did not about they were not entitled to any information related to criminal
records. Unlock helped to get Charlotte into university and helped her find the information
needed to prove the recruiting staff wrong. This provides evidence that Unlock can help
people with criminal records to achieve things. However, if people don’t know about Unlock
they won’t know how to achieve certain things like renting a house with a criminal record.
The reason why unlock wanted a change is because people with criminal records may find it
difficult to do things as they might be discriminated by people when applying for a job or to
rent a house or to even volunteer.

Campaigns that make changes in law are often after tragic events like April’s law and
Claire’s law. April’s law was formed after she got abducted and murdered in Wales. April’s
family later started the campaign as they found it unfair that people could get on and off on
the sex offenders list. They wanted to make in the change and make people who get on the
list stay on the list for a life. This was because April’s murder wasn’t on the list of sex
offenders but was found looking at indecent pictures of child pornography. The family used
methods like petitions to make a change and they were very successful in raising awareness
to make a change in law. The petition received 100,000 signatures then another 70,000
signatures. They were successful as they managed to make sex offenders regardless of
their crimes stay on the register for a life.

Claire’s law has also happened after a tragic event in which she was murdered by her
partner George Appleton. The tragic event had therefore resulted in a change in the law
and now allow a person to ask if their partner has previous domestic abuse history or violent
acts. A partner in any relationship has the right to know and ask if they have such a history.
The campaign itself was invested in, and they made changes to the law by making TV ad
campaigns, it was shared on social media, the campaign made posters to make people
aware which eventually concerned enough people to make a change.

The two campaigns from above have both changed the law, but both campaigns did
differently. In my opinion April’s law had a much bigger audience as parents are always
concerned about their children and if they are safe or not, and there are several other
examples where children got abducted and kidnapped and murdered by people and they are
mostly announced in the news which makes parents more worried that could be one of the
