Introduction
In this research study, a chosen topic is the impact of physical activity on academic performance. It is
a widely researched subject area, focusing on correlation and degree of influence between these
two variables (Tomporowski et al., 2008 and Kayani et al., 2018). However, the latter research
sphere is acknowledged by scholars O’Callaghan et al. (2012) and Pucher (2013) as lacking clear
indications of such an extent. Therefore, a proposed study will be addressing this issue as well as
other limitations found in previous secondary studies. On the whole, this social area under study
significance lies in a general public health problem of the rising number in overweight and obese
students (Leonard, 2017). As a result, the investigation is crucial for a wide population and is
currently a main social concern (World Health Organization, n.d.).
The gaps identified in many peer-reviewed articles are inadequate studies done on UK university
students and without consideration on their connection with tutors (Bryman and Bell, 2015).
Accordingly, the literature will be reviewed and a suitable methodology elaborated in conjunction
2
, with logical reasoning and recommendations for further study. The main question, therefore, is
“What is an effect of exercise on university students’ academic achievements in comparison with
tutors?”.
Research Aim and Objectives
In regard to a research question, the aim and objectives are critical in providing an answer to the
study and setting goals to reach it (Doody and Bailey, 2016). The research title is ‘Physical activity
impact on the students and tutors academic performance’. Respectively, the research aim is ‘To
examine the degree to which physical activity impacts on the students and tutors academic
performance’. A clear indication of study objectives is based upon SMART goals framework (Lawlor
and Hornyak, 2012 and Dudovskiy, 2019).
The project’s objectives are as follows:
1. To investigate the role of exercise on different taught subjects
2. To find out what types of physical activities are known to be associated with educational
achievements
3. How obesity affects academic performance
4. How can businesses benefit from this study findings
Review of the Literature
At a glance, physical health may seem like a completely distinct from that of mental wellbeing.
However, in theory, the peer-reviewed scientific studies favour a balanced diet and exercise, as two
interconnections which contribute to mental acuity (Pucher, 2013 and Wippold et al., 2019). In
practice, various surveys indicate that over a one year period of aerobic exercise participants reduce
the levels of stress and even balance the brain’s neurotransmitters that are responsible for
happiness and energy (Asp, 2014). This is an example of brain-based learning a theoretical
framework which supports ‘moderate to vigorous physical activity’ that enhances cognitive
performance (Mullender-Wijnsma et al., 2015:365). Specifically, students with higher levels of
fitness tend to achieve higher exam results (CDC, 2014).
Another momentous and ancient physical activity is yoga. According to its philosophies physical
suppleness, breathing techniques, and diet are fundamentals in the control of a mind and emotions
(Mental Health Foundation, 2013). The study conducted on 800 adolescent students to perform
transcendental meditation proven yoga practitioners to score higher academically. As a result of,
