Samenvatting:
De ik-figuur (zijn naam komen we niet te weten) is geboren in Indonesië,
maar zijn ouders zijn Nederlands. Hij speelt veel samen met de
Indonesische Oeroeg. Het liefst spelen ze op de Kampong bij het huis
van Oeroeg. De vader van de ik-figuur vindt dat zijn zoon door zijn
vriendschap met Oeroeg te weinig Nederlands praat. Vader en moeder
besluiten dat de ik-figuur tot aan het schooljaar (hij is namelijk al zes
jaar) enkele uren per dag privé-les krijgt om zijn Nederlandse taal op te
krikken. Oeroeg is erg nieuwsgierig naar de lessen en volgt ze dan ook
via een open raam. De lessen van meneer Bollinger hebben resultaat,
maar zelfs jaren later heeft de ik-figuur nog een Soendanees accent. De
vader van de ik-figuur heeft liever dat zijn zoon niet meer op de
kampong speelt. Oeroeg moet maar bij hun huis op Kebon Djati komen
spelen. De ik-figuur speelt liever niet thuis, maar Oeroeg vindt het prima.
