Assignment 1 –

Opdracht 1: Analytisch schrijven

Assignment: Look closely at pages 315-336 from Desmond. In this chapter, Desmond lays
out his methodology and positions himself against researchers who, in his view, strongly
relate their data to their own presence in the field.
RELATE Desmond’s methodology to Goffman’s theory (front stage, back stage, setting,
performance etc…). Use specific examples from the chapter and DERIVE connections
between the two (180-200 words).

helpen en volgen, ‘kind of like your apprentice’ (Desmond 2017: 320).

Opdracht 2a: Desmond’s benadering
Assignment: Desmond’s approach is very different from traditional academic work. His
book sparked some controversy in the field of social sciences when it came out.ASSESS
why this would be the case. What is it about Desmond’s methodology that could have led
other academics to question his work? Bear in mind the links you established with
Goffman’s theory (160-180).
